Meeting Highlights from April 13, 2019

4/14/2019

Our Guild had another wonderful meeting yesterday. Our members browsed our new books and many went to our members' homes for a visit!
Picture
You may borrow books from our library and return them the following month.
Once again we were impressed with the range of talent displayed in the piecing and quilting of our members' quilts.

And Jan's Lesson on Quilting in Negative Space was superb!
This Friday is the deadline for Quilt Submissions for our Fall Show and
our Challenge Quilts are due in June--remember to send in your signup sheet!

May's meeting is replaced by the Andrea Tsang-Jackson Workshop.  This means that your library books will be due in June.

We are entering Quilt Show season! Check out the many upcoming events on our blog!

See you at our next meeting on June 8. And until then...Happy Quilting!!!

April Meeting Supply List- Negative Space Lesson

Have you wanted to learn more about Negative Space?

Join Jan as she explains Negative Space and guides us through a lesson for machine quilting in that Negative Space.

HERE ARE THE SUPPLIES YOU NEED TO BRING TO THE APRIL MEETING:
Negative Space Exercise
The April Guild meeting will have a Presentation about Negative Space and an Exercise to explore how to quilt the Negative Spaces on your quilt. We will look at designing a layout using Negative Space and then create a quilting plan for that Negative Space.  This is a fairly small exercise and could probably be completed in 1 ½ hours.  If time is an issue you could start during Guild and complete it at home.
If you want to participate in this exercise, please bring the following.
Supplies
  • One 20” square quilt sandwich in either white or very light solid (top, batting, backing – could be same colour as top piece)
  • One 6” (cut size 6 ½”) square simple pieced block (eg.: star, 9-patch, 4-patch, churn dash, any of the modern blocks at MQG reduced to 6”, etc.) – any colours or fabric choices that make you happy.
  • Thread in the same colour as your 20” square top.
  • Threads in the same colours as your pieced block (optional because you could use the same colour throughout).
  • Erasable marking pens – 2 colours would be best so either 2 gel pens in different colours or a set of one water soluble (blue) and one disappearing (purple). I recommend NOT using a gel pen together with a water soluble pen.
  • Pencils – maybe 2 or 3 colours.
  • Regular pen – just for use on paper.
  • Ruler – either 12” or 24”.
  • Sewing machine with free-motion (FM) foot and walking foot (WF).
  • Pins to secure your quilt sandwich – only need between 4 & 8 pins.
  • Small cutting mat – minimal use so could easily be shared with others at your table – and a rotary cutter.
  • Small quilt sandwiches – about 8” – 10” for practice.

During the Presentation you don’t have to take any notes.  You will get another Handout by email next week – probably Thursday – to print and bring.  It will be your notes and exercise instructions.
