 by LMQG Member Pat P.

MQG meeting. May 14

Sheilagh welcomed the group and each member introduced herself.

Kristyn and Sheilagh spoke about several challenges for our local guild:

Riley Blake Stash Challenge

Canada 150: block should be something to do with Canada, finished size some multiple of three, white or light grey background, using the palette on the card given out at the meeting.

Quilts con/Quilt X: combined entry done by September for QuiltEx using block pattern provided fourteen times on the front and once enlarged on the back to combine the requirements for QuiltEx and the Quiltcon theme of "scale".

June meeting:  Triangles workshop with Nancy Trowbridge. So no regular meeting.
Click here  for materials list and advance prep work.

October 1is Thread Workshop.  More details can be found here.  Workshop Fee is $65(member)/$75(non-member) includes lunch and kit fee.
Regular meeting is Thanksgiving weekend and we usually just do a sew in.

Fort McMurray:  We have a quilt which was to be used for a charity raffle that has now disbanded so we are going to send it to a person in Fort McMurray who is committed to distributing them. There is a UPS locally that will ship it free.

SWO Mod Quilt Retreat at Elmhurst:  was a big success. Nice chance to meet modern quilters from other guilds. Pam spoke about the "loot" and the take home project. Will be done again in 2018.

Quiltcon East:  Savannah in February, 2017. Details on website. Course catalogue on June 1st. Early registration is June 25.  More important dates can be found here.

Presentation:  Jan Dudek. Purple. The handout for this class can be found by clicking here.  Time spent working on a bias tape project incorporating purple fabrics.
Kristyn demonstrated using irregular strips and chevrons.

Show and tell:  Lyndsey & Mary C. brought quilts and spoke about them.

Just another reminder that there will not be a regular meeting in June.  Our next regular meeting takes place July 9, 2016.  See you there!

PURPLE
The Colour Purple and Modern Play with Bias Tape

presented by Jan
"Everyone should have a small collection of purple prints, tonals, or solids.  You will likely want more prints than solids if you want to try the exercise with bias tape.
I recommend 5 prints but more might be more fun - scrap pieces between 6" and 10" would work perfectly.  If everyone brings a duplicate piece of one or two of their prints, then we can do a trade to increase the possibilities.  You could end up with 7 scraps to play with.
We will be investigating purple and its complementary, analogous, and triadic colours.
In the bias tape exercise you will need a piece of background fabric - I will be using a 20" square so that I can use the exercise later for a small table topper or pillow but you can use whatever size you want.  Don't go too small or it will be more challenging for you.
For your background fabric, choose something like a solid or tonal or maybe a very low value print.  Some suggested colours are white or gray but if you want to be a little more adventurous, purple's complimentary colour is yellow-green and its triadic colours are orange-yellow and aqua-green.  You could also consider a very low value such as a very pale pastel of any of its analogous colours from blue-violet around the colour wheel to blue-red.
You don't need the bias tape - I will have a selection of 3 different colours.
You will also need scissors, pins, an erasable marker such as that gel pen that irons out or a chalk pencil.  The water erasable pen will not work as well for this exercise as you may be ironing your piece before you rinse it.  A glue stick would be helpful but if you don't have one, I have one you may share.
If you have a piece of very fine sandpaper, bring that as it will make drawing on fabric a lot easier.  I have a 12" square that works great. and everyone is welcome to use it - I know this sounds like an odd piece of equipment.
And, of course, your sewing machine."

Improv: Chevrons
presented by Kristyn
For the improv supplies:
  • Scraps of random purple fabric and for the strips and chevron- have these fabrics cut in strips at least 2” longer than the block you are making.  EX: 8 1/2” block cut 10-11” fabrics.
  • Sewing supplies and a few strips of foundation fabric that can be cheap scrap fabric in a light colour so it doesn’t show through.

Here is a brief overview of upcoming London Modern Quilt Guild Canada Challenges:
Picture
We as a guild are hosting our own version of the Sashing Stash Challenge. Please make a mini quilt that is 24" x 24" or less and use a piece of the provided fabric somewhere in your quilt.  The rest is up to you!  Any other fabrics and colours are permitted.  Please bring them to the August meeting.

It's time again for the MQG QuiltCon Charity quilt.  Our guild is looking for a Project Manager who will be the liaison regarding this challenge. Please think of taking on this volunteer job so that we can be organized enough to send a quilt to QuiltCon East.  We have the fabrics & an idea for a quilt design.  The theme is SCALE. Deadline is the end of the year.
