December Meeting Recap

12/27/2015

Our December meeting was held December 12, 2015.  It was a fun meeting filled with delicious treats, beautiful handmade gifts and hilarious games!   Thank you to everyone for making this meeting such a success and thanks to Sonia for creating a very fun scrappy bingo!

Even though our meeting was very social and fun, it was a little bittersweet as Chantal announced that she will be stepping down as Chair of our Guild.  One of our founding members, Sandra, sent a very special Thank You to Chantal all the way from British Columbia, you can read it here.  Thank you Chantal for your persistence in starting the Guild and of of the support you have provided over the years.  It certainly wouldn't be what it is today without you!

We are still seeking a new Chair so if you are interested in knowing more, please talk to Kristyn at one of our meetings, or email the Guild.

Some other business that was announced at the meeting:
  • The programming committee is working on bringing in Nancy Trowbridge for a workshop at our June 11, 2016 meeting.  Part of the cost will be subsidized by the Guild.  More information to follow.
  • The LMQGC will be presenting a Thread Bar Workshop by Anita of Cotton Mill Threadworks on October 1, 2016.  More information to follow.
  • LMQGC Member Gail will be presenting a workshop at the London Friendship Quilters' Guild on January 16, 2016 called "Liberated Baskets", she has opened up the workshop to LMQGC members.  If you are interested in this workshop please email Gail.
  • The London Friendship Quilters' Guild has also extended an invitation to LMQGC members to join them on the bus trip to the Quilt Canada Show in Toronto.  The bus trip will be open to LMQGC members after June 14, 2016.  More information will follow as the date approaches.

Here are some of the fantastic quilts that were shared at our December meeting:

Sometime during our meeting, Jan mentioned Modern Quilt Studio's video "Desert Island: Mud".  I missed the context but made note of it.  Have a look at the video, it is quite interesting!  While you're at it, you may want to look at some of their other videos too!

We had quite a few members stay after the meeting for some social sewing.

Just a friendly reminder, that the membership dues are due for the 2016 Membership year.  You can pay by cash or cheque at the meeting, or online by PayPal.

Our programming committee has some exciting stuff planned for 2016. Stay tuned for more information!

Our next meeting will be held January 9, 2016.  We hope to see you there!

At our December meeting, Chantal announced that she will be stepping down as Chair of our Guild for 2016.  One of our founding members, Sandra, sent a very special Thank You to Chantal all the way from British Columbia!

"
It was Chantal's idea to start a Modern Quilt Guild, and she used to say - at every meeting, "It's not MY quilt guild" but in a very real way it was, because it would not have existed but for her. The early meetings were when we tried to put some sort of structure to the group and Chantal became president.  We opened a bank account, with Chantal fronting the membership fee at Libro, and we started keeping financial books.

In 2011, we were meeting in Chantal’s store, but were getting about 20-25 out to a meeting, and we had outgrown the space, so Chantal arranged to rent meeting space for us at the London Public Library.

We were meeting in the evenings, and parking was 2 hours, so we had to make the meetings just under that in length. Members would volunteer to do some sort of educational piece at a meeting, and of course there was show and share. Quilters are their own worst critics, but Chantal led the cheering section for everyone's work "There are no quilt police!” which was such a supportive thing to hear.

Our membership seemed to dwindle as we formalized.  Several times Chantal advanced the guild money to keep us in the black. Eventually, we decided that we could not afford to pay space rental, although we had moved to a smaller room, and by spring 2012 we went back to meeting in Chantal's store.

Chantal was the source of most new members, mentioning it to those who shopped in her store. Sheilagh joined in 2013, and developed the website and we began to grow again, slowly but steadily, with members who knew about the Modern Quilt movement and were attracted to that style.

Meetings continued to involve members demonstrating something, show and share, and congruent with the Modern Quilt movement, websites related to quilting were shared.

Chantal-hosted workshops, with leading modern quilters like Kaffe and Brandon and Jackie Gering, which attracted more attention to modern quilting in London and more new guild members.

Chantal has also generously donated supplies and fabrics for many guild charity projects including the MQG Quilt and Limberlost’s Learn to Quilt group.

Please join my in thanking Chantal for everything she has done for the London Modern Quilt Guild since it’s inception- we wouldn’t be here without you."

Thank you for your kind words Sandra! We couldn't have said it better.  Thank you Chantal!

Visiting the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild meeting.

Sheilagh and Kristyn went to the Toronto MQG meeting on the last Sunday of November- which was a great meeting to attend since it was their holiday meeting!  Games and treats and great company.
Rebecca went through the guild business at the start of the meeting, and then straight into games.  They played "quilting" bingo with quilt blocks for the bingo cards.  The members made the bingo cards with certain colours of fabric and used a variety of prints, solids, checks, flowers etc for the different squares.  Here are some examples of the bingo cards and how to win charts.

Then there was a secret gift game where one person picks a gift, then the next person can either steal that gift or pick a new one.  This got pretty stressful as there was a fold up thread catcher and a beautiful necklace that kept being stolen over and over again.  Here is a photo of the whole group with their gifts.

The last game really put your mind to work.  Rebecca (with some help from her daughter) made a bunch of HST blocks and had diagrams on how to organize the HST to make blocks.  Two people raced against each other and the fastest person won.  It was arranged like a tournament with finally Rebecca and Samarra as the final 2.  The whole game was quite competitive!

It was such a fun meeting, and so nice to meet the Toronto MQG members.  Thanks again for having us!
