February Transparency Supplies for meeting- Feb 11th at 10AM

1/31/2017

For our February meeting we will be learning about Transparency Quilting.  We will be drafting our own block/ mini quilt.
For the workshop please bring graph paper and coloured pencils as well as your fabric.

Your fabric choice will need at least 3 colours and think about how they interact with each other if they were transparent and layered on top of the other.  One simple idea for colour would be to take 2 colours and then blend them and that blended colour is the middle colour.  EX: blue and yellow fabrics plus green.

You can keep it simple or make it as challenging as you would like.

Other ideas would be to bring light to dark grey fabrics for a monochrome block, or bring light to dark of one colour and create an ombre transparency.  Or use one colour and a grey and make that blended colour a greyed shade of the original colour.

Also bring what ever background fabric you would like to coordinate with your focus transparency fabrics.  Probably 1/2 a metre would be enough.

Here is a pattern for a table runner you may wish to work on as well. Bring as many rainbow fabrics you might need to create the transparency effect.

And as always, bring your sewing machine and supplies and lunch if you can stay into the afternoon for the Sew In.

Our first meeting for 2017 was held on January 14 and we had a full house!  As of this Saturday we have 40 members!! This is quite a milestone for us.  We have now run out of room and have spilled over into a second room at the East Lions Artisan Centre.

Kristyn recapped some of our guild business including membership renewals, call for executive members, LIbs Elliot Workshop, Fabric dyeing workshop with Doris Lovadina-Lee & the SWO Mod Quilt Retreat.

Sheilagh introduced the LMQGC Logo Challenge.  You can find more information about this challenge on our Challenges Page under our Resources Tab.

Linda discussed the The Great Canadian Quilting Bee being held by the CQA.  You can find more information about this chqllenge by clicking here, or looking on our Challenges page under our Resources Tab.

Once again we had so many fabulous pieces shared at our show and share:
Sheilagh demonstrated English Paper Piecing to the members.  Everyone now has a new (or renewed) love for handwork!
Picture
Bonnie demonstrated how to make an Open Wide Pouch by Noodle-Head.  Some members used their new hexies on their new pouches!

QuiltCon Charity Quilt

1/10/2017

For the past 2 years, the London Modern Quilt Guild Canada has participated in the QuiltX Quilt Show. Our guild has an information booth where we can promote modern quilting and display our member’s quilts.

Something unique about the QuiltX show is that each year, they feature one quilt designer who creates a new quilt pattern specifically for the quilt show.

Jen Houlden designed a quilt called Chop Sticks and each vendor at the quilt show creates their own version of the featured pattern.  We were given the pattern and a black and white copy of the block layout and then given free reign to make our own unique quilt. (quilt layout by Jen Houlden)
Picture
The London MQG Canada decided to use the suggested colours for the MQG QuiltCon Charity Quilt for our QuiltX quilt.  We also wanted to make a 2-sided quilt to emphasis scale in our design choice.  One side of the quilt has the regular sized blocks and made with the grey, blue and green fabrics and the other side has one giant quilt block and uses white, yellow and pink for the fabrics.
Picture
As a guild we spent a few meetings where our members pieced the quilt blocks.
The blue and green fabrics were cut and arranged in a few different colour combinations to create depth in the blocks.
Keeping each set of fabrics organizes was a challenge!
Every block has the “chop sticks” made from the gold fabric to tie them together. We added a few extra blocks and 2 more rows to make the quilt the required size for QuiltCon.  Here is the sewing in progress at one of our guild meetings.
A pretty productive day I think!  Look at all these blocks!
Picture
Once the blocks were complete, our members arranged the multiple block layout for the one side, while others worked on the giant block for the second side.
Large scale wavy lines were quilted, the binding finished and it was ready for the QuiltX show!  It was very interesting to see the many different quilts that were on display- all made with the same quilt pattern.
Picture
For QuiltCon, we will have the Chop Sticks quilt, with the large-scale block on display.  If you are attending QuiltCon and see our quilt, take a peek on the back to see the second layout.

Here is the "other" side of the quilt hanging at the QuiltX Quilt Show.

January 2017 Meeting Reminder

1/7/2017

Note: We are not moving our meeting location!!!  The City of London has postponed the renovation of the East Lion's Artisan Centre until June 2017.  This means we can stay put and enjoy the perks of having our own dedicated space!  As we approach June 2017, we will provide more information on the actual move

Here is an early reminder for our January Meeting!
Here is our agenda:
  • Membership renewals are due for 2017. You can renew online via Paypal by clicking here or in person by cheque.
  • Call for volunteers to audit out financial records.
  • Recap of Our Executive Committee for 2017
  • Reminder that the deposit for the SWOMod Quilt Retreat is due April 1, 2017. More Info can be found here.
  • Sign Up for Libs Elliot Workshop.  Limited Space available! More Info can be found here.
  • Sign Up for Fabric Dyeing Workshop, July 8, 2017. More information can be found here.
  • Bring your Canada 150 Mini Quilt.
  • Reminder for Slab Blocks for the Great Canadian Quilting Bee held by the CQA
  • Introduction to our New London Modern Quilt Guild Logo Quilt Block Challenge.
  • We will have a open sew-in until 4:30pm that day.  Bring a project and stay for the afternoon!
Our program this month will be a 2 parter.  The second portion requires a bit of preparation. In addition to your sewing machine and simple sewing/quilting kit,  here is what you need to know:

Part 1 : Introduction to English Paper Piecing

PicturePhoto by "I Finally Have Time"
Sheilagh will lead a lesson on English paper Piecing Hexies.  A small kit will be provided to each member.  In addition to this kit, please bring 7-10 scrap pieces of fabric no smaller than 2.5"x2.5".  A mini Charm Pack would be great for this exercise.

Part 2: Open Wide Pouch Lesson

Bonnie will lead a lesson on how to make an Open Wide Pouch (Pattern by Anna Graham aka Noodlehead)

We ask that you come prepared for this class by having all or your pieces cut and ready to go.  You will need the following materials:
  • fabric, 1/4 yard would be plenty (SEE CHART BELOW!)
  • zipper, at least 10″ long or longer (SEE CHART BELOW!)
  • thread
  • interfacing of your choice, batting or skip it all together
  • scrap for zipper end pull
Here is a diagram that outlines the sizes you can make and the requirements for the fabric and zippersrequired for each size:

Our December meeting was held on December 10, 2016.

We started off with some with some quick agenda items and quickly moved into our TIcker Tape Quilt Lesson led by Linda.

If you are interested in knowing more about this lesson, you can download the handout on our new Resources Tab by clicking here, or in the tab above!

We played a round of Christmas Bingo led by Sonia.  It was a great way to get to know our members.

We then had our gift exchange.  Instead of the tradiitional Yankee Swap, we listened to a story about Mr & Mrs. Right and had to pass the gifts left, right and across until the story was over.  It was a great way to mix up the gifts.

While we enjoyed some yummy treats, we shared some great work at our show and share this month!
Our guest, Angelina, shared her very first pieced block EVER!  Congratulations Angelina!

Nancy Trowbridge stopped by to see all of the quilts that were made from the workshop she taught in June 2016.
Nancy even shared some of her current work:
