QuiltCon Charity Quilt

For the past 2 years, the London Modern Quilt Guild Canada has participated in the QuiltX Quilt Show. Our guild has an information booth where we can promote modern quilting and display our member’s quilts.

Something unique about the QuiltX show is that each year, they feature one quilt designer who creates a new quilt pattern specifically for the quilt show.

Jen Houlden designed a quilt called Chop Sticks and each vendor at the quilt show creates their own version of the featured pattern.  We were given the pattern and a black and white copy of the block layout and then given free reign to make our own unique quilt. (quilt layout by Jen Houlden)

The London MQG Canada decided to use the suggested colours for the MQG QuiltCon Charity Quilt for our QuiltX quilt.  We also wanted to make a 2-sided quilt to emphasis scale in our design choice.  One side of the quilt has the regular sized blocks and made with the grey, blue and green fabrics and the other side has one giant quilt block and uses white, yellow and pink for the fabrics.

As a guild we spent a few meetings where our members pieced the quilt blocks.
The blue and green fabrics were cut and arranged in a few different colour combinations to create depth in the blocks.
Keeping each set of fabrics organizes was a challenge!
Every block has the “chop sticks” made from the gold fabric to tie them together. We added a few extra blocks and 2 more rows to make the quilt the required size for QuiltCon.  Here is the sewing in progress at one of our guild meetings.
A pretty productive day I think!  Look at all these blocks!

Once the blocks were complete, our members arranged the multiple block layout for the one side, while others worked on the giant block for the second side.
Large scale wavy lines were quilted, the binding finished and it was ready for the QuiltX show!  It was very interesting to see the many different quilts that were on display- all made with the same quilt pattern.

For QuiltCon, we will have the Chop Sticks quilt, with the large-scale block on display.  If you are attending QuiltCon and see our quilt, take a peek on the back to see the second layout.
