Here is a recap of the Improv With Intent workshop from Linda McLaren.

Well, this was such a fun and freeing day!  Cheryl's amazing ability to put people at ease really shone today.  Improv can be very challenging, especially for people who are much more comfortable with order and rules and lines to stay within.  Her only request was to not make just log cabin blocks in our improv piecing :)  She had wonderful suggestions for bringing our 'intent' or idea to life - whether it was a feeling or a scene or a saying.  And then how to break down the idea into a process that translates to fabric.

There were no two pieces anything alike in the student work today.  Each vision had its own way of being expressed.

The workshops were hosted by Hyggeligt Fabrics and held at the St Mary's Golf & Country Club.  The facility was big and bright and the lunches were great!
Practice pieces from all the students puzzled into the beginning of a quilt top.

Linda's Memories of Muskoka - rocks & grass, autumn colours, blue sky, birch tree - each area is created with slab blocks, which I've not done before but really enjoyed.  I was going to slash and insert the birch tree, but I squirmed and cogitated - concerned that it wouldn't give me the organic feel I was wanting to portray.  Cheryl suggested applique and it was exactly the right option!  The fabric is white with words in script, which looks quite birchy from a distance and is very punny :)

Thanks again Linda for letting us know what you learned in both of Cheryl's classes and for all the photos- we loved seeing what the students were making- each one being so different.
