Map Class with Andrea Tsang- Jackson from 3rd Story Workshop

The night before Andrea gave a very informative trunk show (see previous post)

The next day our members jumped right in making maps of SW Ontario.  Andrea started with explaining her map technique and the steps to make a map, as well as the supplies needed. 

The first step was to cut out the land sections. 

And then fusing the land to the water background.

Once your land was in place- making careful attention to include all the tiny islands, the green park areas were fused.  One of our members lives near the Pinery Provincial Park- can you see that in one of the photos?

Then the next step is the topographical quilting.  The students had the option to quilt the highways they wanted as well as the option to include certain personal landmarks to make their maps more interesting.

Here Andrea explained how to quilt around shapes and along the land edges and water shores.  Then how to quilt the different "depths" of the water keeping close attention to how the water flowed from lake to lake.

Andrea also showed us how to finish our quilts as well as framing the map. 

And there was time at the end of the workshop to discuss how the students could use this new technique to make other maps of locations of their choice.
